The roofing shingle installation process
Preparing the roof surface:
This includes removing any old roof shingles and debris, repairing any damage to the roof deck, and installing underlayment (a protective layer between the roof deck and the roofing shingles).
Installing drip edge:
A drip edge is a piece of metal flashing that is installed along the edges of the shingles to help prevent water from seeping under the architectural shingles.
Installing starter shingles:
Starter shingles are the first row of designer asphalt shingles that are installed at the bottom edge of the shingles. They are specially designed to seal the bottom edge and edges (called rakes) of the shingles.
Starter shingles serve many important functions such as: sealing the bottom edge of the architectural shingles. This contributes to increased wind resistance, and keeps water from seeping in from under the edges of the shingles. Since starter shingles are installed on the edges of the shingles, they are visible from the ground. they contribute greatly to the designer asphalt shingles overall look.
Installing the Roof shingles:
Once the starter shingles are in place, the rest of the architectural shingles are installed in rows, starting at the bottom of the roof and working up. Shingles are overlapped to provide proper water drainage and to create a seamless appearance. We install asphalt shingles with either four or six nails, and we use the Atlas installation manual in order to insure that the roofing material being installed on your home is installed the way it was intended to be.
Installing flashing:
Flashing is a piece of metal or other waterproof roofing material that is used to seal around the shingles penetrations (such as vents, chimneys, and skylights) to prevent water from entering the home.
Installing the ridge cap shingles:
Ridge cap shingles are a special type of asphalt shingle that is used to cover the peak of the roof. They are installed last to provide a finishing touch and to help protect the ridge of the roof from wind and water damage.
Decking Replacement
There are a few situations where the decking (the underlying wooden structure of a roof) may need to be replaced during a roofing project
Water damage:
If the decking has been damaged by water, it may be necessary to replace the affected sections. Water damage can cause the wood to rot or weaken, which can make it unsafe to support the shingles weight.
Structural damage:
If the decking has been damaged by a storm or other event, it may need to be repaired or replaced in order to ensure the structural integrity of the roof.
Age:
Over time, wood decking can begin to deteriorate and weaken. If the decking is old, and you notice water staining or discoloration, it may need to be covered as part of a roofing project.
Upgrading:
In some cases, homeowners may choose to replace the decking as part of a roofing project in order to upgrade to other types of more durable or longer-lasting decking.
Code requirements:
Building codes may require the decking to be replaced if it does not meet certain standards for thickness or strength.
In general, if the decking is in good condition and not structurally compromised, it may not need to be replaced as part of a roofing project. However, if different types of the above conditions apply, it is likely that the decking will need to be replaced in order to ensure the safety and integrity of the roof.

Customer testimonials
Very professional company that delivered a high quality roof on my cabin a pleasure to do business with!
When Scott gave me the estimates, one was for a metal roof and the other a shingle roof the metal roof was twice as expensive but I was worried about mold growth and was going to go with the metal roof but he talked me into the lower priced asphalt shingle roof because of the new technology that doesnt allow mold to form. That is a testament to the honesty and integrity of this company – Kevin K.
My whole experience with Magnum Roofing from start to finish was seamless, form dealing with insurance to the clean up of the last bit of debris.
A big thanks especially to Matt – Nancy D
