The first documented European in what is now Allendale was Pierre Constant, a French fur trader who established the trading post at Charleston for John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company in 1810. The land within these current borders has been inhabited by humans since at least 200 BC to 500 CE; earliest evidence suggests occupation by Goodall Focus -a Middle Woodland Hopewellian culture that lived on this continent when itfirst became known as North America . The Charleston trading post was located on the Grand River in what is now downtown Allendale, just south of where M-45crosses it.
The town was platted by Civil War veteran George H. Wood in 1865 and named for his wife’s family’s hometown in New York State. The first schoolhouse was built in 1867 and held classes for children of all ages. The first church was built in 1869 by the Methodist Episcopal denomination; other churches followed shortly thereafter. Allendale’s first business was a sawmill, which began operating in 1870.
In 1871, the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad (now part of Norfolk Southern) reached Allendale, making it easier for residents to travel and transport goods. The village was incorporated as a charter township in 1873 and its first election was held in January 1874. The first township hall was built in 1876.

The Allendale Community Park has a 40-acre park situated near the township office. It contains an honored Veterans Garden of Honor that honors U.S soldiers, with nine statues representing veterans from all wars fought by America’s population.
